Core Drilling

Core drilling delivers clean, concrete coring solutions for pipe penetrations and structural sampling. The preferred method for installing plumbing, electrical, and ventilation systems, as it minimizes vibration, dust, and noise during operation. Ideal for occupied buildings and sensitive environments

Hand & Ring Sawing

Hand and ring sawing are perfect for confined areas where larger machinery cannot operate. We have the right tools to guarantee precision and flexibility. Expect detailed cutting for corners, beams, and small structural modifications without affecting nearby materials or finishes.

Wire Sawing

For thicker reinforced-concrete structures that need precise cutting during structural modifications or controlled demolition. Before cutting, our team does concrete scanning to identify embedded services, reinforcement, & post-tension cables within the wall or slab.

What We Check Before Cutting Concrete

Every concrete cutting job in Victoria starts with a site assessment. Here’s what our team confirms before any blade or core bit touches the surface:

Permit requirements

Concrete cutting itself doesn’t automatically require a building permit, but the renovation, alteration, or demolition it’s part of does. The City of Victoria’s Building and Plumbing Regulation Bylaw covers construction, alteration, repair, and demolition work, and the City recommends checking its Permit Finder before work begins. We confirm your project’s status before cutting starts.

Structural implications

Concrete cutters identify if your wall, slab, foundation, or opening is part of the building’s structural system. Under the BC Building Code, when concrete cutting is part of a larger alteration, the affected components can fall under current Code requirements (even if the rest of the building doesn’t).

For Part 3 buildings, a registered professional is always required; for smaller Part 9 buildings, that depends on the scope. Our team flags when a project needs engineering sign-off rather than assuming one way or the other.

Existing services

Before cutting, our Victoria contractors check the area for electrical, plumbing, mechanical lines, or embedded reinforcement. Hidden conduit, pipe, or rebar in the cutting path can turn a routine job into a costly repair. Locating these first keeps your project on schedule and on budget.

Silica and dust control

Cutting, drilling, or grinding concrete releases respirable crystalline silica. WorkSafeBC identifies these as high-risk activities requiring dust control measures. Our crews use wet cutting and dust extraction methods aligned with WorkSafeBC guidance to keep the site and surrounding air clean.

Construction noise

Victoria regulates construction noise under its Noise Bylaw, which covers activities like concrete sawing and core drilling. Expect us to plan cutting schedules around permitted work hours and, where needed, help coordinate any required noise exemption.

Our Process for Smooth, Accurate, and Mess-Free Cuts

Our concrete cutting in Victoria follows a structured five-step process to deliver accurate, damage-free results on every job. Concrete cutting experts assess the site, material type, and cutting depth required to determine the right tools and approach. That assessment drives every tool-and-technique decision that follows.

  • Step 1 — Measure and mark cut lines accurately

Our team uses calibrated marking tools to establish exact cut paths before any equipment runs. Concrete thickness edge clearance, and structural elements that must stay intact are all accounted for — eliminating the guesswork that leads to miscuts and material waste.

  • Step 2 — Match the saw or drill to the concrete thickness

Diamond blades, core drills, wall saws, and flat saws each suit specific applications. A blade right for a 100mm residential slab won't perform on a 300mm post-tensioned deck. Equipment is selected based on what the structure actually requires.

  • Step 3 — Set up wet cooling for blade routine & cut quality

Setting & monitoring water flow to keep diamond blade segments at the correct operating temperature. Overheating dulls blades faster, causes warping, and produces rougher edges, especially on longer cuts through dense or heavily reinforced Victoria concrete.

  • Step 4 — Deploy dust suppression to protect the site and its occupants

Vacuum extraction runs alongside wet cutting to capture respirable silica dust at the source. In enclosed or occupied spaces, this isn't optional. It's a WorkSafeBC compliance requirement that our team meets on every residential and commercial job.

  • Step 5 — Execute clean, controlled cuts

Blades run at the correct depth, feed rate, and speed for the material. Operators adjust continuously based on how the concrete responds to prevent vibration & surface spalling that occurs when cuts are forced or rushed through unpredictable aggregate & reinforcement.

  • Step 6 — Clear debris and leave the area work-ready

Concrete waste, slurry, and core plugs are removed immediately once cutting is complete. The site is swept and contained for minimal mess, so follow-up trades (plumbers, electricians, and structural crews) can start without delay. A clean handoff is part of every job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before cutting concrete?

Concrete cutting should begin within 4 to 12 hours after placement, the window where the slab is firm enough to saw but hasn’t hardened to the point where uncontrolled cracking becomes a risk. In warmer conditions or direct sun, that window shrinks, and cuts may need to start as early as 2 hours after pour. Per ACI 325.12R-02(19), early cutting is acceptable once the surface can support the saw without ravelling.

What happens if you don't cut concrete within 24 hours?

Waiting beyond 24 hours to cut or remove concrete is one of the most common causes of uncontrolled cracking on a slab. Once concrete passes that threshold, it has already begun to shrink and harden, and without relief joints in place, internal stress finds its own path out. The result is irregular fractures that compromise both appearance and structural integrity. Control joints exist to give that stress somewhere to go, but only if they’re cut while the concrete is still responsive.

How deep should concrete cuts be?

Concrete control joints should be cut to at least one-quarter of the slab’s total thickness, which is deep enough to create a weak plane where stress can release in a straight, controlled line rather than cracking randomly. Since concrete cutting is used to create openings for doors, windows, and utility installations, for thinner slabs where one-quarter depth comes in under 1 inch, cut to a minimum of 1 inch to maintain effectiveness. Cutting too shallow is one of the leading reasons joints fail to control cracking, even when the timing was right.

In what way do you minimize dust during and after cutting concrete?

Dust control during concrete cutting starts with method selection: wet cutting is the preferred approach, in which water is continuously applied to the blade to suppress particles at the source and reduce heat buildup. When wet cutting isn’t feasible, industrial-grade dry extraction systems with high-efficiency filters and vacuums capture airborne dust before it spreads. Wet cutting also requires slurry management. The water-and-concrete byproduct needs to be properly collected and disposed of.

What are the common methods of concrete cutting?

The most widely used concrete cutting methods are diamond blade sawing, core drilling, wall sawing, hand sawing, and wire sawing, each suited to different applications.

  • Diamond-blade slab sawing handles horizontal surfaces such as floors and pavements.
  • Wall sawing uses track-mounted equipment to cut clean vertical openings, such as doors and windows.
  • Core drilling produces precise circular holes for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC penetrations.
  • Hand and ring sawing cover confined areas where larger machines can’t reach.
  • Wire sawing handles large or complex cuts where conventional blades aren’t practical.

Do I need an engineer before cutting a concrete wall or slab?

An engineer’s review is strongly recommended (and often required) before cutting into any load-bearing concrete wall or slab. Concrete structures carry and distribute weight in ways that aren’t always visible from the surface, and cutting in the wrong location or at the wrong depth can compromise that load path. For non-structural slabs, such as a basement floor trench, the risk is lower, but the reinforcement layout and post-tension cables still need to be identified before any blade goes in.
